Some 40 km / 25 miles to the west of Agra, the fortified city of Fatehpur Sikri was the state capital briefly during the latter part of the 16th century and features many exceptional attractions, such as red-sandstone palace buildings and pavilions, the grand Jama Masjid mosque, which was built in the middle of the 17th century, along with a series of historic tombs. The Palace of Jodh Bai is particularly outstanding and based around a large courtyard, featuring magnificent columns, cupolas and traditional blue roof tiles. Mathura lies some 58 km / 36 miles to the north-west of Agra and this area is known as the 'Land of Eternal Love'. Thought by many to be the birthplace of Krishna, Mathura was once actually a major Buddhist centre, although today it is filled with many impressive Hindu temples. The main attractions in Mathura include the Sri Krishna Janmbhoomi and its Kesava Deo Temple, the large Archaeological Museum, the marble Gita Temple, and regular boat trips along the Yamuna River.
